Contemporary Art: Who Cares?

I think quite in line with the theme of October Contemporary in Hong Kong, we are all asking who want Contemporary art.

Registration will start in November 2009.

Contemporay Art: Who Cares? will take place at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam from 9 - 11 June 2010. Participants are also welcome at the pre-symposium reception on the evening of the 8th of June.

Tickets to the three-day international symposium will cost:
€ 290
€ 160 for students
Included in the price of the ticket is a copy of the book Inside Installations (working title), which is due for launch in March 2011.

The programme is being created in collaboration by a group of experts from 34 organisations who are working together under the umbrella project PRACTICs. Most of these individuals worked together during the EU project Inside Installations (2004-2007). For more information about PRACTICs follow this link.

Co-organisers of the symposium would like to point out that there will be no call for papers, but there will be a call for posters. This is expected to be sent out in November 2009.

CA:WC will feature plenary lectures as well as a choice of circa 10 parallel sessions per day; discussions, workshops and site visits. There will also be time allocated to poster presentations and networking sessions. The themes for the congress are as follows:

Day 3: Access, presentation & the public

Where's The Chicken: A Locative Robotics Project

This project, presented by the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, aiming for the foundation of future hub in media art research, especially for installation art, locative media and robotics art. It features the exclusive opportunity in Hong Kong for young creative professionals, artists & students to develop their creative concepts through collaboration with the invited artist, Annie On Ni Wan, PhC from Center For Digital Arts & Experimental Media, University of Washington, Seattle, US.

香港浸會大學視覺藝術院冀望通過本計劃逐步為香港發展首個以裝置藝術、公共藝術和機械藝術為重點的媒體藝術平台，本計劃邀請本地藝術家溫安妮與具專業水平之視覺藝術人才和學生合作，為媒體藝術平台定立基礎。


Step 1: Professional Workshops
All workshops provide unique hands-on training within the context of contemporary experimental art scene. Selected workshop participants will be invited to a number of individual project consultation meetings with the artist and participate in the 10-days arts festival during Summer, 09. All exhibition material costs and equipments will be provided. Each workshop costs $390 (12 hours/ workshop) and workshop participants must be enrolled in at least 2 workshops.

此工作坊目標為培養各學員成為優秀藝術人才，促進他們在當代藝術領域上的創造力與實踐能力。工作坊的藝術專業顧問將會由本地媒體藝術家溫安妮擔任，屆時，被挑選的參加者會被作出個別指導，並創作其個人作品，他們的作品將會於為期10天的藝術節中展出，而本藝術院將會為被挑選的參加者提供展覽的物料和成本。每個工作坊的材料費為 $390 (12 小時/ 工作坊)，而每位參加者必須參與至少兩個工作坊。

　　（A） Fabrica：“设计思想”工作坊
　　位于意大利的Fabrica是举办创新性工作坊和创造性研究项目的顶尖机构，“电子艺术基地”内将展现“远程工作坊”的实践成果，并开启新一轮次的“设计思想”长期计划。来自各个艺术设计领域的专家们将会带领年轻的项目参与者，以团队的形式进行远距离在线创作。该项目将为参与活动的年轻学生打开新的远景，突出交互式文化学习的重要成果。
　　工作坊形式：作品发布、研讨
　　
　　（B）ICC：“概念建筑体”工作坊
　　来自日本ICC艺术中心的艺术家将在“电子艺术基地”内建设一座与周遭环境实时互动的“建筑”装置。环境参数将被反馈在“建筑体”的结构之上。创作该装置的艺术家将在现场解析他的创作理念，邀您一同延展和开拓对“空间”与“建筑”的认知。
　　工作坊形式：现场制作、作品展示、艺术家讲座
　　
　　（C）V2：“城市空间•玩乐时光”工作坊
　　从荷兰远道而来的新媒体艺术家将带领大家一同开发一款城市空间内的公众游戏。工作坊将涉及对城市空间游艺、艺术行为和游艺介入行为的DIY设计。在“电子艺术基地”之内，参与者们将在导师的带领下完成“游戏”项目，而游戏成果将在工作坊的后期开放性地呈现在城市空间区域。
　　工作坊形式：项目开发、驻村创作、讲座、作品展示
　　
　　（D）VS：“创意作品”工作坊
　　法国的Visual System将为“电子艺术基地”现场创作和展示三项装置作品并邀您参加一个以手机为媒介的游戏项目。VS的优秀艺术家和新媒体专业的学生们将以讲座等方式为工作坊的参与者们解析他们的创作理念，并与大家一道体验城市空间内的新媒体游戏。

　　（E）传媒公司：创意与产业研讨会
　　多家中外传媒公司将汇聚“电子艺术基地”，共同研讨创意与产业链接的可能性。

VAC is very active in promoting new media art. In this month,the programme, Sense of a Place, will focus on works of US based new media artists - Sala Wong and Peter Williams. On 12 July @ 3:00pm they will give an Artist Talk on 'Locative Art' and, a
fun-filled interactive art demo (19 July @ 3:00pm) in which you will create
a piece of interactive work with the little help from a digital foto keyholder.

B3 and Mediamatic present the Moving Image Lab.

A unique hands-on approach to enable you to develop new media projects across a range of media platforms including podcasting, streaming media and participatory web 2.0 to mobile phones.

This programme is aimed at media artists such as directors, producers,filmmakers, designers and musicians. We aim to create a cross-pollination of creativity and ideas; where the emphasis will be on the art of storytelling through multimedia technology.

B3 has a limited number of FREE places are available for the Moving Image Lab.

工作坊內容：

邀請資深藝評家主持工作坊，藉此培育新晉的藝評人，提升他們的藝術欣賞和評論的技巧。透過藝術欣賞、作品及評論寫作技巧分析，工作坊提供一個基本的藝評認識課程予學員。工作坊包括四個不同範疇：(1) 戲劇、(2) 電影、(3) 媒體、(4) 文化研究。工作坊包含六節共十五小時的課程，為期六星期。每位學員須於完成後提交一篇評論。

Fritzing -a new initiative for physical computing

This is a new initiative, not much there right now but worth keeping an eye on if you are interested in physical computing.

“Fritzing is an open-source initiative to support designers and artists to take the step from physical prototyping to actual product. We are aiming to create a software in the spirit of Processing and Arduino, that allows the designer/artist/researcher/hobbyist to document their Arduino-based prototype and create a PCB layout for manufacturing. The complimenting website helps to share and discuss drafts and experiences as well as to reduce manufacturing costs.

Fritzing will essentially be an Electronic Design Automation software with a low entry barrier, suited for the needs of designers and artists. It will use the metaphor of the breadboard, so that it will be easy to transfer your hardware sketch to the software. From there it will be possible to export CAD files ready to be sent to a PCB manufacturer”.

They have started a review of existing PCB design software, and how the new software could be developed.

On 17th September they are running a workshop in Potsdam (near Berlin) to bring like minded experts together to discuss the future for this platform (full agenda).

Fusion -Workshop @ Taiwan

A tangle of senses, Taiwanese nightmarkets entice through their crowded streets, delicious people, interesting people, and motley of trinkets and toys. As a condensed and scaled down representation of a larger culture, this miniaturized landscape makes for an interesting terrain for analysis and invention. The Taiwanese Nightmarket Workshop is a hands-on and theoretical seminar that involves its participants in an artistic and technological engagement with the urban environment. This year's theme – fusion – embraces notions of cultural, disciplinary, and perspectival hybridity.
For 2007, we invited various MIT researchers from the Media Laboratory, CSAIL, Department of Architecture, and Visual Arts Program. Students and researchers will form four different groups, including Group 1-Narration, Group 2-Urban Playground, Group 3-Urban Dynamics, and Group 4-Urban Music.

面對數位化藝術新型態的多樣表現，即便在創作中撰寫程式被視為是工程師或科學家的工作，但具備對基礎程式語彙的了解，卻是現代藝術家在數位藝術創作熱潮中所必須要學習的溝通能力。


由國立台灣美術館主辦、微型樂園執行之「數位藝術教育暨創作推廣計畫」，在考慮軟體的簡易性、可得性與未來的發展性之下，選擇免費的 DBN (Design By Numbers) 程式作為教育推廣的工具。DBN 的指令與邏輯非常適合當作入門的基礎訓練，藉由二十幾個指令的學習介紹，沒有程式背景的藝術家也能夠藉此與更進階、目前極熱門的 Processing 軟體工具，乃至其他高階應用軟體接軌，在未來擁有執行各種複雜作品的能力或是具備與技術人員共同對話的基礎。


此次的研習課程將邀請國內軟體藝術研究者與專研數位藝術史的老師在小班個別教學的帶領下，讓學員們藉由二天的課程進入數位藝術的世界，如此難得且免費的教學活動您怎可錯過呢？趕緊參考相關的訊息來報名吧！

你想嘗試在電腦上自創互動的歷險遊戲／故事嗎？ Inform 7 為一嶄新的程式語言，專為創作歷險遊戲和互動文學而設。由於Inform 7以日常英語寫成，你就算不了解電腦程式也會覺得它容易掌握。不出三數小時的訓練，你便會懂得以 Inform 7 編寫遊戲／故事，設計出複雜的環境和事物，甚或一些不受玩者控制的虛擬人物。

香港聲境工作坊

工作坊導師將介紹及引用音樂家Murray Schafer的「聽覺生態學」理論，並透過試聽各種實驗音樂，引導參加者認識及提昇日常聆聽經驗。導師更會教授基本數碼錄音，讓參加者隨意以戶外、戶內及身邊各種聲響為題材，以聲音描繪城市的不同面貌，創作別樹一格的「聲音環境」。
