Light up the the city with secret message.

Most persistence of vision projects I have seen involve moving a strip of leds fast enough that our eye perceives it to be an image. Make magazine has covered many projects of this type.

Jens Wunderling, a student of the Digital Media Class at UDK Berlin, has created at second glance, an alternative approach to POV. Instead of moving the LEDs, Wunderling has them fixed in position, but plays with saccades (our eyes never look straight, but always make fast tiny movement around an area).

So if you happen to glance past the work, you may notice something unusual. On second glance, if you shake your head, you will be able to clearly see the symbol. Created as a “guerilla messaging device, made to place hidden critical messages within the abundant medial environment in the city”.

Developed using Arduino and Processing, the source code of which is available on his site, and 32 ultrabright LEDs.

a + b = ba ? ~[art + blog = blogart?]

JavaMuseum - http://www.javamuseum.org is starting its 2nd phase by publishing on open call focussing on the question whether blogs and/or blogging can be tools for creating a new type of net based art.

The launch of this new project in September 2007 is planned to be also the occasion for re-launching JavaMuseum after a phase of re-structuring since 2005.

JavaMuseum - Forum for Internet Technology in Contemporary Art,founded in 2000, realized between 2001 and 200518 show cases focussing on Internet based art in a global context, including more than 350 artists from 40 countries. In this way, JavaMuseum was able to show for the first time the dimension of Internet based art as a new and individual art genre, even if it is continously said to be dead.

For a + b = ba?, JavaMuseum is inviting
artists to submit such an art project
which is using the blogging technology.

One blog project only can be submitted.

Please use this form for submitting:

1. first name/family name, email address, URL homepage
2. short artist bio/CV
3. title of project, year of launch
4. URL of project

Next to something more sublime.
No one bite the dust... Harray for the Zimmer.. Forever young - is it Paul Young or George Michael Song?
www.myspace.com/thezimmersband
The oldest and greatest rock band in the world - meet The Zimmers and their amazing cover of The Who's "My Generation".
Lead singer Alf is 90 - it's quite something when he sings "I hope I die before I get old". And he's not the oldest - there are 99 and 100-year-olds in the band!
The Zimmers will feature in a BBC TV documentary being aired in May 2007. Documentary-maker Tim Samuels has been all over Britain recruiting isolated and lonely old people - those who can't leave their flats or who are stuck in rubbish care homes.
The finale of the show is this group of lonely old people coming together to stick it back to the society that's cast them aside - by forming a rock troupe and trying to storm into the pop charts.
Some massive names from the pop world have thrown their weight behind The Zimmers... The song is produced by Mike Hedges (U2, Dido, Cure), the video shot by Geoff Wonfor (Band Aid, Beatles Anthology), and it was recorded in the legendary Beatles studio 2 at Abbey Road.
Look out for the single being released from May 21 - with proceeds going to a good cause.
And check out more photos and info at:

If you know the video film "that the way things go", you see this Japanese video has its own wit. Enjoy.

The Optronica Festival

I cannot stretch my holiday and what a pity to miss Optronica. See a report from Shift. Here are some photo of what I had been looking so forward to, EBN Emergency Broadcast Network on top, Peter Greenaway on the middle. Reactive table follows. They all looked fabulous..
some juice: "....This was followed by cinematic luminary Peter Greenaway, who showed off his new live cinema performace, the Tulse Luper ‘stories’, an hour-long show about Uranium (yes, the radioactive substance), and a man’s journey with it. This was depicted by showing the contents of exactly 92 suitcases containing an odd assortment of objects, from ink, blood and a rotting corpse, to pairs of womens underwear. True to form, Greenaway didn’t give too much away in the form of narrative or a coherent meaning, but as usual, the imagery was beautifully rich. What was especially wonderful was the interactive device he used, a touch screen interface which he slid his fingers over to trigger the visuals, departing from the familiar performance-behind-laptop scenario.

Over in the smaller theatre, another live presentation was taking place that would be a shame not to mention – ‘Reactable’, by the Barcelona-based Music Technology Group. Word has it that the legendary Bob Moog had a hand in this piece, although it’s just as plausible to imagine Captain Kirk and Spock playing with it on board the Starship Enterprise. Transparent plastic shapes were shifted around a circular back-lit table, each one triggering a sound relative to its position in relation to other shapes, and eminating a light as they were placed on the surface. It’s got to be one of the most intriguing interactive AV experiments ever undertaken, as a kind of futuristic music-machine which has implications for how we can interact with sound and light simultaneously. And more importantly, it succeeded as a performative piece, because the audience could easily recognise how the sounds were being generated.

‘Reactable’ was performed at various times throughout the festival at the Optronica Lounge, not far from the screening cinema. It provided a relaxed space for visitors to hnag about and experience a range of interactive installations with a handful of couches and beanbags thrown in for comfort. ,,,

...The night’s performers included techno pioneer Speedy J and US collaborator and film-maker Scott Pagano, a live set from veterans Emergency Broadcast Network, and a selection of local DJs and VJs. It was reportedly a real gathering of London’s AV scene, along with a healthy handful of European and international AV artists, and a rare occurance in what is a relatively small scene...."

Monkey_Party is out from Lowave

Monkey_Party is an interactive and random generating video DVD by the projectsinge group. Monkey_Party is an interactive video installation that aims to sneak into our daily lives by manipulating common household audio-video equipment (TV, DVD player, stereo ...) in order to open our senses to new experiences. It's an alternative audiovisual encounter between performances, video, experimental cinema and digital art. + Info

I finally log on to Burb using imac :(

I talked to the person who build this site at DEAF, he assures that the project is not just a concept, they are really building it. I already signed up to him to get more information about the new development.

'New Media: Who, What, Where, When and Why.'

Those who are interested in surveying the current status of new media art, as it's been informed by a few decades of development, ought to visit or read the online essays for the Neuberger Museum of Art's exhibition series, 'New Media: Who, What, Where, When and Why.' Based at the State University of New York, in Purchase, the museum has made a major commitment to the study of new media with this series that has already spanned three years. 'New Media: Who' opened in 2004 and included 'heavy-hitters' ranging from Nam June Paik to net art pioneers Mendi and Keith Obadike. 'New Media: What' took on the precarious challenge of defining what constitutes new media, while ultimately displaying the diverse nature of media-based practices in effect today--including digital animation, machine vision, sound art, and web-based work. 'New Media: Where' focused on the theme of displacement and what the organizers saw as 'our sensory and social projection into the abstract digital world.' The current episode of the series, 'New Media: When' is on view through June 10 and includes work by Char Davies, LoVid (pictured here), Marshall Reese and Nora Ligorano, and Brooke Singer. The focus, in this case, is on time: our perceptions and representations of the temporal, as well as the ways in which artworks can change in form, as they evolve. - Elizabeth Johnston via Rhizome

Summer workshop in Europe

Transart Institute today announced the workshops and seminars for this years' summer residency. Workshop topics range from "Language and Image" to "Archeology of Media", with seminars coming in flavors of "Software as Metaphor" and "Documenta XII User Guide", to name a few. The full program can be found at: http://transartinstitute.org/Pages/Summer_2007.html.

Applications to the low-residency MFA program are being accepted with rolling admissions until June 1, 2006. Five places are reserved for the final deadline to accommodate the European schedule.
Transart Institute's international MFA in New Media program is designed for working artists to develop a sustainable creative praxis in
— three summer residencies (17 days each) in Linz, Austria plus two optional winter
residencies in New York
— and two school years of independent project work with supporting mentorships - wherever they work and live.

The innovative program focusses on content and context. Students work in the genres which best communicate their ideas including animation, architecture, curating, cyberart, digital and experimental media, film, gaming, graphic design, installation, painting, performance, photography, robotics, sculpture, sound, text, video, virtual reality.

The program is intended to lift the boundaries between applied and fine arts, traditional and new media, artists and scholars. Students are free to pursue work in any media art-related genre and to create their own course of study. Detailed information is available on
the institute's website: www.transartinstitute.org and through email from: info@transartinstitute.org.

Interactive shop window for Nokia Hong Kong. To launch the new N-Series range we built an interactive photomosaic mirror. Using Processing and webcam to create a realtime reflection made from 1000's of thumbnail images. Featuring movement-sensitive branding, and animated 'sleep' mode during quiet times. In-store branding included an animated lenticular-tiled pathway, and photomosaic portrait staff t-shirts. Wii work out

製造商話Wii將body 變成joystick是一個新嘅work out concept。

Open Source Cinema- Wiki Film and CopyLeft

OpenSourceCinema.orgis a collaborative documentary project to create a feature film about copyright in the digital age. Watch the trailer video, it is just what Hong Kong digital copyright law maker should really look into. Opening Nanny is awesome and I bet John Lennon, Lou Reed are proud of the soundtrack too.

Check out the wiki film page from Bret(creator of open source cinema)

Great discussion between an avid open source developer and Bret himself :
">As an avid open source developer, I'm sometimes puzzled about how the Open Source concept is >bantered around, without any real understanding of how it works in the real world.

The concept of Open Source is expanding beyond software. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_content

>Opens Source software projects are often very restrictive in nature, and have very few people who are >actually allowed to contribute to the source tree; this usually happens only after many months or even >years of proving that they can cut it as a core developer.

This isn't a project like that ;) . Ultimately, the film Basement Tapes will be assembled by me, but this space (the website) should be about Creative anarchy. It isn't owned by anyone and should be fluid. This is the difference between art and software - art needs a LOT of influence.

>Sadly, we live in a world short on modesty, where millions of talentless people suffer from the delusion >that they have something to offer the world.

damn! Luckily, we live in a world where increasingly, millions of people REALIZE they have something to offer the world!

P.S.
Roots of Rebellion – Oswald, Negativland and Culture Jammers
We have been talking about cut up the other day and Windful asked me about the difference between editing, collage and cut up, I hope this video can give some insight.

Interact or Die! DEAF 2007

V2_Institute for the Unstable Media
