Theo Jansen in Japan

The first exhibition in Asia by one of my favorite Dutch artist Theo Jansen is held from January 17th (Sat) to April 12th (Sun). On display at the specially constructed venue are Jansen's "strandbeests" (beach creatures). These kinetic sculptures have "skeletons" made out of plastic tubes, and mechanisms that harness wind energy to walk and move.

Theo Jansen Exhibition
Venue: Hibiya Patio
Schedule: From 2009-01-17 To 2009-04-12
10:00-21:00 (last entry 20:30)
Address: 1-4-1 Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0006

I had shown his Ted Talk video in class and is very much loved by students. However it is very difficult to bring this mechanical(non-electronic) creature to walk on the sands in Hong Kong. The art climate here is just too strident for it.

Moveable type at NY Times Building

My all time favorite new media art work "Listening Post"(2002) has never been able to come to HK. Microwave presented only their photo documentation in 2004. I saw it finally last year at ISEA and get so moved that I almost broke out my tears.
The artist Ben Ruben and Mark H Hansen did a new project "Moveable Type" at the lobby of New York Times Building, using words from William Burrough.

Contour 2007 - third biennial for video art

Participating artists: Aline Bouvy/John Gillis, Gerard Byrne, Neil Cummings/Marysia Lewandowska, Omer Fast, Cao Guimarães, Carsten Höller, Saskia Holmkvist, Hassan Khan, Tsui Kuang-Yu, Gabriel Lester, Deimantas Narkevicius, Rosalind Nashashibi, Cédric Noël, Gert Robijns, Lucy Skaer/Rosalind Nashashibi, Supersober (Bohdan Stehlik/Una Szeemann), Sarah Vanagt

Curator: Nav Haq

This summer the city of Mechelen will become the epicentre of the third edition of the Contour Biennial for Video Art. The exhibition presents a selection of video works by international artists, both well-known and emerging. The most important exhibition of its type in Belgium, Contour 2007 will be presented in 12 exceptional architectural locations, all walking distance around the centre of the city.

Contour 2007 - third biennial for video art has been given the subtitle Decoder. The exhibition presents a number of video and film works in a double-edged line of enquiry. It investigates the perceptual and rhetorical mechanisms that exist which affect and shape how people assimilate their comprehension of the world. Within this investigation it also analyses the contemporary tendencies within lens-based media art practices for looking at the particular issue above, whether self-reflexive or not. The exhibition looks at the contemporary conditions and desires for consuming through the visual, and questions the capacity for effectively debating socio- and geo-political issues through this consumption. It is not intended to be a political biennial as such. Rather it looks at the means that exist through which we consume political concerns, and then interrogates itself to ask the reason why this act is relevant within contemporary art in the first place.

Aside from 8 existing works, Contour 2007 also presents no less than 9 new ones that have been created especially for this exhibition. As in previous editions, the format of a city tour combined with video art in different locations will be emphasised. The project is citywide, and a range of sites are being used. Historical sites play a role, as well as unused sites that formerly had some kind of public function. There are also sites that presently have active public relationships of various forms.

In order to give each edition of the biennial a new 'artistic injection', and therefore possessing it its own specific character, a new guest curator is appointed each time. This third edition is curated by Nav Haq, a young London-based curator, soon to be the curator at the Arnolfini, Bristol. The artistic team also includes London-based designer Sara de Bondt and Ghent-based architect house BARAK.

A catalogue with essays by Nav Haq and Nina Möntmann, plus interviews with all the participating artists, has been published to accompany the exhibition.

Open Source in New Media Art

DIY (Do-It-Yourself) is not new to most design and art lovers. But when DIY goes digital, it is not as easy as it seems to be truly self-initiated without commercial software. The spirits of Open Source are to provide an open platform for digital media users to upload and download programming sources free of charge, and allow them to individualize these sources as their own designs and applications. Such free exchange of ideas and information ultimately gather collective experiences and creativities, which is much more meaningful then just doing things on one’s own.

GuLLDY and their co-curator Jeff LEUNG are pleased to present the exhibition “Right Click:Open Source New Media Art Exhibition”. Three international creative parties will present their interactive new media artworks based on Open Source programming and technology. What will be showcased are not only the completed works of art but also the entire processes as well as sources of the technology and the conceptual ideas applied to these works. In short, the exhibition aims to open and share with audiences every step involved in the productions of the exhibits, promoting the very spirits of DIY(Do-It-Yourself) and Creative Commons.

Creative parties including Daniel Shiffman (USA), Josh Minor (USA), mirco+playground (Taiwan) will present their works in the exhibition. Among these parties, Josh Minor and mirco+playground will come from aboard for the opening party and seminars, sharing their creations and creativities with audiences.

The exhibition is part of GuLLDY’s media art programme series subsidized by Hong Kong Arts Development Council. It will commence on 24 May at Kapok Gallery and will last until 13 June.

'New Media: Who, What, Where, When and Why.'

Those who are interested in surveying the current status of new media art, as it's been informed by a few decades of development, ought to visit or read the online essays for the Neuberger Museum of Art's exhibition series, 'New Media: Who, What, Where, When and Why.' Based at the State University of New York, in Purchase, the museum has made a major commitment to the study of new media with this series that has already spanned three years. 'New Media: Who' opened in 2004 and included 'heavy-hitters' ranging from Nam June Paik to net art pioneers Mendi and Keith Obadike. 'New Media: What' took on the precarious challenge of defining what constitutes new media, while ultimately displaying the diverse nature of media-based practices in effect today--including digital animation, machine vision, sound art, and web-based work. 'New Media: Where' focused on the theme of displacement and what the organizers saw as 'our sensory and social projection into the abstract digital world.' The current episode of the series, 'New Media: When' is on view through June 10 and includes work by Char Davies, LoVid (pictured here), Marshall Reese and Nora Ligorano, and Brooke Singer. The focus, in this case, is on time: our perceptions and representations of the temporal, as well as the ways in which artworks can change in form, as they evolve. - Elizabeth Johnston via Rhizome

Moritz Waldemeyer with Hussein Chalayan

Moritz Waldemeyer presents mechanical dress at Hussein Chalayan’s Autumn/Winter 2007/8 collection, which was shown in Paris last week.

In his second collaboration with the fashion designer, designer-engineer Waldemeyer produced some new mechanical dresses plus dresses with full video capability: each is covered with 15,000 individually controllable LEDs, meaning the surface of the dresses can display moving video imagery.

“Basically there are two dresses where the whole dress is a display,” says Waldemeyer, who first worked with Chalayan for his Spring/Summer 2007 collection last year, engineering remarkable mechanical dresses with motorised flaps and seams.

Below: mechanical dresses from Chalayan’s Spring/Summer 2007 collection, which Waldemeyer engineered.

Writing machine again

Writing & Machine as Sites

Writing Machine Collective 2nd Edition [WMC_e2] aims at presenting accessible, and yet quality works with a strong research impulse to the public to illustrate one kind of possibility for new media art. This involves a new experience of writing via computer-programming-based machine capabilities.

In this edition, we particularly focused on a dialogue with Generative Art, a form of art that has been extensively explored in 20th-century fine arts and experimental literature, and more recently in media arts that involve code-based programming. In addition, we seek to ensure the works selected to shed light on our banal everyday life setting and popular cultural elements as much as possible.

All the exhibited works are interaction-based, and some highlight real-time performance. Compared with works in WMC_e1 (2004), next to the idea of machine, and the materiality of writing, we have placed a much stronger emphasis on interface design in order to strengthen the installation art quality of these works.

The interests and individual strength of the 11 artists (or teams) pertain to very different possibilities of the future development of the “Writing Machine,” and only a full assemblage of them helps to illustrate to the public the richness and diversity of this rather less attended aspect of new media arts. Along with the exhibition, a broad range of educational activities will be carried out to bring the project to fruition, including lectures, workshops, and an on-line virtual parallel exhibition, all of which will cover a six-month period.

From the perspective of research impulses, WMC_e2 is essential for further clarification of the theoretical issues and creative impulses involved in the play with technology. WMC_e2 embraces long-term multi-disciplinary enquiry, and therefore it should be more than just an exhibition of finished works.

"Intermedia" exhibition

Engaging 'Intermedia'
In the mid-sixties, Fluxus artists began using the term 'intermedia' to describe work that was both interdisciplinary and composed of multiple media. The term highlights the intersection of artistic genres and has gradually emphasized performative work and projects that employ new technologies. The exhibition 'Engaging Technology: A History and Future of Intermedia,' on view through March 11 at Muncie, Indiana's Ball State Museum of Art, offers an art-historical survey of such activity. Artists Richard Bloes, Hans Breder, Adam Brown, Gary Hill, Dick Higgins, Jenny Holzer, Golan Levin, Nam June Paik, and Alan Rath show work that explores 'intersections between electronic media and various modes of art making--video, poetry, sculpture, performance, sound, typography, music, and installation.' Organizers John Fillwalk and Tania Schuler worked to explore the etymology of the term 'intermedia,' while emphasizing the practice of artists who 'are particularly interested in the! relationship between a viewer and a work of art.' Fillwalk's curatorial statement argues that, 'In encountering that threshold of engagement, the viewer can enter into a partnership with the artist in shaping the direction of the work.' The implication is that these pioneering pieces have an ongoing legacy and flexible trajectory. Meanwhile, the show is a refreshing look back at the history of new media. If you can't visit it in person, check out the online video tour. - Marisa Olson

Aftershock -

  •参观现代艺术展览的观众与日俱增;

  •现代艺术馆,如伦敦的泰特现代美术馆(Tate Modern),成为很受欢迎的英国旅游目的地之一;

  •自毕加索之后,艺术家首次成为媒体所关心的“超级明星”;

Lyon 2007

There are now 103 biennials around the world, mapping news that is growing exponentially, apparently renewable at will, and interchangeable. Flux is prevailing over singularity. One hundred and three biennials, 103 lists of artists, 103 titles... a biennial opens roughly every three days, and they cover one another. Their mechanics inhabit and generate a perpetual present, stretching to infinity. How, then, can a biennial still have critical authority? In 2003 and 2005, we opened a debate on this new form of temporality ?firstly on the programmed future, and then on duration.

And now the debate continues: starting with the conviction that there must surely be a history to news and an archaeology to the news of news (the undifferentiated present), I invited Stehanie Moisdon and Hans Ulrich Obrist to reflect upon this challenge and conceive the 2007 Lyon Biennial. Their ambition is clear: to open the century and name the decade, but with humour. The 2007 Biennial will thus be a game, played as it should be with the utmost seriousness; it will explore issues to do with players, of course, but also with polyphony and, especially, the essential place occupied by the artist.

Thierry Raspail
Artistic director, Lyon Biennial

The 21st century hasn't yet begun, the century has to begin!
Alain Badiou

The next Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art will open on 17 September 2007. The project devised for this 9th edition by Sethanie Moisdon and Hans Ulrich Obrist is a history book written by a number of people. The history of a decade yet to be named; of a present that is endlessly arriving.

The project is structured like a grand game, with rules for selecting and casting the roles; a game in which some 50 players from around the world are invited to invite an essential artist of this decade. The ultimate purpose of this game, in which invitation is the rule, is to produce together an original landscape, to rethink the format and grammar of contemporary art biennials, and to create living matter from the archaeology of now.

This history book, published on the occasion of the biennial, is both the project's origin and its horizon. It is conceived as a space open to different voices and trajectories. It will comprise essays by philosophers, critics and historians, and the manifesto texts of each player, centred on a particular vision of the present and of what is happening on the contemporary creative scene. The dynamic system which develops through the formation of this community, enables us to reach beyond generational, geographical and thematic axes and to shift the hierarchies and conventions of knowledge into a feedback loop.

From http://www.villagypsy.com/2006/10/25/hong-kong-microwave-art-festival/

London 2 : The Royal Academy of Arts Presents 'USA Today'

It cost 9 pound to go in and does it worth it? Well, if you are are dying to see one or two famous work, ok but the famous works do not mean good work, so you decide.

LONDON - An exhibition featuring new work from The Saatchi Gallery by forty young American artists, will be brought together at the Royal Academy of Arts in USA Today. Over 150 new works of art will be presented including paintings, sculptures and photographs. The exhibition will run from 6 October – 4 November 2006 at the Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington Gardens.

USA Today features a new generation of American artists, together with other young artists who have moved from Europe, Asia, Africa and other parts of the world to work in the United States. The subjects of these recently made art works, most of which are no more than two years old, focus on the artists’ views of world events and America’s place in global society.
