Urban Screen Melbourne 08

Urban Screens Melbourne 08 is hosted by Fed Square Pty Ltd, and is the third international conference and multimedia exhibition in a series of worldwide Urban Screens events. It will also mark the official launch of the International Urban Screens Association, taking place 3-8 October at Federation Square, Melbourne.

Conference: Mobile Publics 3-5 October 2008 Full Program

What caught me are the case studies from Manray Hsu :
2008 Taipei Biennial - A case study

Urban screens have become a kind of meta-architecture. Through their ubiquity and fluidity, these screens, especially the large ones, constantly redefine the spatial relationships of the urban environment. They are new defining architectures of architecture. The 2008 Taipei Biennial utilized some of these screens as part of its venue for showing video-based works. On the one hand, this presents both an opportunity for more unpredictable encounters between art and urban space users, and offers challenges for the recontextualization of these works. On the other, it also poses the question of whether art is able to destabilize a public space generated and maintained by these meta-architectures, to add ambiguities to the certainty of information, of the social dream of the capitalist society. Aside from these curatorial and artistic aspects, my presentation will also touch on practical and technical aspects such as the technology of display, timing and encountering.

and also from Andreas Broeckmann

'Intimate Publics. Memory, Performance, and Spectacle in Urban Environments'
Cities are sites of spectacle. We walk around, looking into faces, checking out shop windows, posters, screens and facades, scanning for the new, the unexpected, the beautiful, and the wicked. The 'screen' of the city is cluttered with surfaces and items, vying for attention. A barely distinguishable mix of mediated messages we either look for - whether as street signs, clues we want to find again, or maybe as oversized TV screens during a popular sports event - while other items we barely notice, or learn to ignore. What does it mean to 'look' in public space? Are we being cheated, or caressed, by the empty billboards whose surface time no advertiser has rented? Do the large video screens testify to the triumph of a post-urban anonymity, or are they mere signs of a failed attempt at competing with the intimate media that vibrate in back pockets, and that cocoon the gaze and the listening mind? What does Josef Robakowski's 1978 video, From My Window, tell us about the multiple layers of public and private observations, about the interlacing of personal curiosity, voyeurism, and state surveillance? Who are the subjects of viewing in public space? And what does it mean to perform the city space, furrowed with surveillance technology, like those people in Noise (1998) who left their anonymous video messages to the recording box that Zoran Todorovic placed in the streets of Belgrade? The view from the window of Berlin's Staatsbibliothek cafeteria in 1998, out onto the wasteland of Potsdamer Platz, before the fall of the Wall, an age before the construction of the Sony Center: a personal memory, shared by many, a lost image reflected in Wim Wenders' movie, Wings of Desire (1987), that has Curt Bois stumbling across what used to be Potsdamer Platz, unable to find a real equivalent for his half-century old memories of the city's face. Each city, wherever people live, is rife with such imaginations, a cultural stage, and a container of mediated memories.

The Urban screen community is the development of Mirjam Struppek whose blog has been inspiring for almost a decade.

CHANEL CONTEMPORARY ART CONTAINER BY ZAHA HADID

One of the most enjoyable part of being a curator for me is the design of the space and the walk through experience. I am so amazed that there will be a soundwalk in this much anticipating monumental art project. Although I had a similar idea before but it was banned due to infringing other exhibited space.

MOBILE ART is a traveling exhibition devised as a three-dimensional film and presented in a futuristic pavilion specially created by the architect Zaha Hadid.

The creative concept of MOBILE ART is the result of an aesthetic experiment conducted over the last two years in which the values and visual language of CHANEL confronted those of some twenty contemporary artists from all geographic and generational origins.

Invited to visit Mademoiselle Chanel's Parisian apartment, rue Cambon, and the workshops where the CHANEL handbags are made, these artists were given complete freedom to create artworks inspired by the elements that create the identity of CHANEL's emblematic accessory, the quilted bag.

All means of expression currently being used in contemporary art will be represented: installation, sculpture, photography, video, sound etc...

MOBILE ART is not so much an exhibition to be visited as a landscape to wander through in a completely new way: to experience the artists' installations, visitors equipped with a MP3 player must let themselves be guided mentally and physically by a soundtrack created by the label "Soundwalk" in collaboration with each of the artists. This soundtrack mixes the original music of a diverse range of artists with voice and ambient sound effects.

MOBILE ART is above all a new form of artistic expression, an unique experience, combining architecture, art, sound creation and fashion.

Situated Technologies Pamphlet 3: Situated Advocacy

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Situated Technologies Pamphlet 3: Situated Advocacy
http://situatedtechnologies.net/?q=node/76

Deadline for abstracts: February 15, 2008

The Situated Technologies Pamphlet Series invites submissions for its
upcoming volume on "Situated Advocacy."

Advocacy is the act of arguing on behalf of a particular issue, idea or person, and addresses issues including self-advocacy, environmental protection, the rights of women, youth and minorities, social justice, the re-structured digital divide and political reform. How might Situated Technologies be mobilized toward changing and/or influencing social or political policies, practices, and beliefs? What new forms of advocacy are enabled by contemporary location-based or context-aware media and information systems? How might they lend tactical support to the process of managing
information flows and disseminating strategic knowledge that influences individual behavior or opinion, corporate conduct or public policy and law?

+ Submission details:
We are seeking submissions from pairs of authors, in keeping with the format of a "conversation" between two individuals or groups. Please submit a 500 word abstract and short bio for each author (150 words max) in Rich Text Format (RTF) by February 15, 2008 to editors@situatedtechnologies.net. We expect final manuscripts will range from 7500-10,000 words and will be due by May 16, 2008. Please contact us if you have questions about potential essays or the Situated Technologies Pamphlet Series in general. More information is available at http://www.situatedtechnologies.net.

+ About the Series:
The Situated Technologies Pamphlet Series consists of nine short pamphlets to be published over the next three years, exploring the implications of ubiquitous computing for architecture and urbanism:how our experience of space and the choices we make within it are affected by a range of mobile, pervasive, embedded or otherwise "situated" technologies. The series, published via print-on-demand(POD), consists of a succession of "conversations" between researchers, writers and other practitioners from architecture, art, science and technology studies, comparative media study, performance studies, and engineering.

+ Series Editors:
Omar Khan, Trebor Scholz, Mark Shepard

+ Advisory Committee:
Keller Easterling, Anne Galloway, Malcolm McCullough, Howard Rheingold

Open City with Eyebeam

Looking at the Open City site, I surprisingly realised that graffitti with light (laser) can caused acqusation of vandalism...

Graffiti writer, artist, and friend of the G.R.L. AVONE has recently been incarcerated on charges of vandalism. We haven’t used this site as platform to raise money in the past but if we can gather $2,000 bail ASAP then we can keep our friend from having to spend the next 3 weeks in jail. If found guilty he faces a sentence of at least 9 months.....

Reversible Destiny Lofts

Avant-garde architects Shusaku Arakawa (an artist) and Madeline Gins (a poet) have recently unveiled a childishly wacky/cool apartment complex in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka. Curiously, the nine apartments in it are meant to be uncomfortable. "People, particularly old people, shouldn't relax and sit back to help them decline," Arakawa told Newsweek International. What that means is the nine apartments are shiny and plastic-like with big geometric shapes -- like a McDonalds Playland laid out after a little too much peyote. From Newsweek:
Inside, each apartment features a dining room with a grainy, surfaced floor that slopes erratically, a sunken kitchen and a study with a concave floor. Electric switches are located in unexpected places on the walls so you have to feel around for the right one. A glass door to the veranda is so small you have to bend to crawl out.
And they cost $750,000, at least double what other places in the same nabe go for. Now that's uncomfortable.

Why again copycat from Hong Kong ?

Plenty of gadgets have borrowed from the iPod's design, so why shouldn't buildings get in on this action, too? The iPad (how original) will be a 23-storey residential tower with a look inspired by the Apple iPod. Crazy as that already sounds, here's the really good part: a "docking station" is part of the design! Designed by James Law Cybertecture International in Hong Kong, the $800 million tower will be built by Omniyat Properties, a Dubai-based developer.

Never mind that the iPod family will be in its Nth generation by the time this modern monolith is finished — can you imagine living in the iPad for years after that? What about when all our media fits in a memory wafer the size of your fingernail and the iPod is completely obsolete? Where will you live then, cool guy? Stop trying to live out Tron! It's a movie… it's make-believe.
