Bloggers Help Free Chinese Filmmaker
We appeal to the Chinese government for Hao Wu’s immediate release!
When Chinese filmmaker Hao Wu did not show up on Feb. 22 2006 to meet a friend at the gym in Beijing, the Internet community jumped into action. A picture of Wu on a shocking red background and bright yellow text that said “Free Hao Wu” soon popped up on hundreds of blogs in China as well as around the world.
Within weeks, about 1,000 websites carried the picture of Wu, which linked to a website called FreeHaoWu.com where information about the case was constantly updated. It was a virtual version of going block by block to post fliers for a missing person.
Wu, a Chinese citizen with U.S. permanent residency, was finally released on July 11 after nearly five months in detention. His case is a testament to the power of the blogging community to generate information and gather support. With an estimated 60 million bloggers in China, blogs have become a powerful tool of social support for causes ranging from feminism to freedom of speech.
Technology has been a way to thwart the government’s efforts in controlling the public. In 1989, Tiananmen Square protesters used fax machines to reach out to the international press. Last year, 12,000 workers mobilized using cell phone text messages to go on strike against their company. The blogosphere’s high interconnectedness made Wu’s case very visible in the blogging community, and by extension, on the Internet....more

一口氣, 為天星碼頭做了很多功夫. 資料沒有好好整理, 擺得很亂, 我只好破天荒在一天出第四篇文, recap一下資料.
事情發展到這個地步, 鐘樓能否救回, 我們不大樂觀. 但人死於冤獄, 後世也會為他討回公道! 天星即使毀掉, 我們也得為她討回公道, 為廣大被屈"沒有反對過"的市民討回公道, 為歷史討回公道, 為這幾天的示威者討回公道.
根據統計學, 我不相信, 全香港有十五萬人在同一日去追思天星碼頭, 竟然沒有一個專業人士反對過拆卸鐘樓! 究竟幕後有甚麼事發生?

Sailboat designed by blog
"I just came across this new sailboat called the Flying Tiger 10. It's a 10m raceboat built in China for $44,000 -- about half of what a comparable boat built in America would cost. It fits in a single container, and the steel cradle can be turned into a trailer. Perhaps the most interesting thing though, is that this boat was designed by a set of folks collaborating via blog and wiki. Boat designer Robert Perry and Bill Stevens posted about the idea on Sailing Anarchy. Pretty soon people started showing interest, making suggestions, and putting down money for the boats, sight unseen. Over fifty boats have been sold so far, all over the Internet as far as I can tell; there are no dealers (unusual for boats). You can read more about this in article from Sailing World.
It's neat to see how these web collaboration principles are moving out of purely electronic products into the "real world". The boat looks good too. ..."

On 28th and 29th last month, I was in Hongzhou not for the film awards but went to the 2nd chinese blogger conference.

V2 in China Bloggers Conference
V2_Institute for the Unstable Media will be helping out and participating in the upcoming China Bloggers Conf (see early post) to be held in Hangzhou on the weekend of Oct 28/29. They will be hosting the live stream, and doing some online moderation of selected panels - but more importantly will be hosting a panel entitled CREATIVITY 2.0.

and del.icio.us augment the omnipresence of Blogs into complex global communities of users linked via an infinite number of personal backgrounds, interests and goals and create new forms of social, cultural, artistic and economic networks. In areas where traditional forms of monitoring and control of information is pervasive the complexity and diversity of blogging’s reach drives the creation of new platforms and forms of expression. Blogs brought to life by anyone anytime are now creating a blogosphere rapidly replacing traditional information structures by unifying in cross-media frameworks the same mechanisms of text and visual tagging, cross-referencing of information, and opinion gathering established with the Internet over a decade ago. But how do these structures originate, who do they serve, and how are the bloggers covered by‘traditional’ or local media? Beyond global entertainment and free-for-all journalism can Blogs instill new cultural identities and open up new zones of dialogue and critique? Can they lead to cultural and artistic production per se, or drown in parody and hasty mash-ups during their authors’ 5 minute bursts of fame?

Original news :【明報專訊】陳太、葉太近日齊齊開 Blog（網誌），香港大學有一位學者也來湊熱鬧， click入熱爆網站「Xanga」後，不斷搜尋，終於發現原來全球正有 820人借廣告用Xanga的網誌平台辱罵黑人，內容充滿歧視、仇恨。這位來自港大商學院的年輕助理教授周昭瀧靈機一觸，將這個現象變成研究題目，論文更贏得國際殊榮，只是周博士對寫Blog提不起興趣。
年輕女孩愛在網誌傾訴心事﹔好動男孩在網誌內由打機至運動，天南地北無所不談。學者出身`29歲的周昭瀧最擅長寫文章，卻想不出網誌題材。「我其實也有一個Blog的，只用來跟學生討論功課。」
論文討論黑人被辱罵問題
在港大任教資訊系統 3年，周昭瀧上月拿他那份研究網誌的論文《從博客中尋找及分析仇恨團體》，參加在吉隆坡舉行的資訊界權威會議——第10屆亞太資訊系統會議，擊敗來自 25個國家的學者合共提交的 300篇論文，贏得「最佳論文」大獎。
他的論文題目令人看得一頭霧水﹕什麼是「仇恨團體」﹖「就是指對種族有歧視、仇恨團體。」周昭瀧集中研究網誌上歧視黑人的情，在 Xanga發現800多名美國和歐洲白人，有的無原無故以粗言穢語大 黑人﹔有的聲言﹕「今天回家途中在街上被黑人眼望望，忍不住打了那黑人幾拳。」有的更辱黑人「樣衰」、「低能」等。
「我細心檢查過，沒有香港人在那個網站 黑人。」周昭瀧指出，網誌引發的效應是﹕只要有一個人開始 聲，其他的侮辱言語便會接踵而來，Blog因而成為新一代的口誅筆伐平台， 人也毋須負上任何刑責。
年輕人易受 Blog內容影響
周昭瀧希望用論文揭出網誌的影響力﹕「年輕一輩很容易受Blog的內容影響，但究竟網上你一句、我一句說的有幾真實﹖」他指出，也有人在網誌上嘲笑黃種人的英語口音及文法，但侮辱程度不及 黑人的嚴重。
質疑網誌成具破壞力平台
觸發周昭瀧去年8月選擇網誌作為研究題材的，是他曾看到有恐怖分子利用網站，在全球招兵買馬鞏固勢
力的新聞，於是他想到﹕近日盛行的網誌，可會成為另一個具破壞力的平台?
「互聯網究竟拉近、還是扯遠了人與人之間的關係﹖」曾在美國留學4年的周昭瀧，明白種族之間的歧視難以消除。科技進步的同時，他寄望世人能緊記「尊重別人」這個基本價值的重要。

年輕人易受 Blog內容影響
周昭瀧希望用論文揭出網誌的影響力﹕「年輕一輩很容易受Blog的內容影響，但究竟網上你一句、我一句說的有幾真實﹖」他指出，也有人在網誌上嘲笑黃種人的英語口音及文法，但侮辱程度不及 黑人的嚴重。
質疑網誌成具破壞力平台
觸發周昭瀧去年8月選擇網誌作為研究題材的，是他曾看到有恐怖分子利用網站，在全球招兵買馬鞏固勢
力的新聞，於是他想到﹕近日盛行的網誌，可會成為另一個具破壞力的平台?
「互聯網究竟拉近、還是扯遠了人與人之間的關係﹖」曾在美國留學4年的周昭瀧，明白種族之間的歧視難以消除。科技進步的同時，他寄望世人能緊記「尊重別人」這個基本價值的重要。
