Brian Eno's Music for Airports: New Audio-Visual Counterpoint

I went to the performance last night, I assured you there is no Brian Eno in person but may be in spirit:
Brian Eno's Music for Airports
New Audio-Visual Counterpoint

Welcome on board airline CM! Fasten your seat belts as members of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble takes you through a sample-infused electro-acoustic soundscape. Riveting electronic symphony and live video projections will reconstruct the old Kai Tak Airport - the real and the imagined - in this audio-visual portrait of a disappearing city.

Five of Hong Kong's best experimental musical talents will pay tribute to the Godfather of electronic music - experimentalist Brian Eno, whose Music for Airports single-handedly invented the genre that is now known as ambient music. This is certainly an experimental music mega event that you do not want to miss!

Refresh your ears with a CM hand-picked mix of experimental audio-visual compositions that promises to extend your horizon way beyond the cruising altitude.

Today's Platform for Contemporary Music
Founded in 2007, is a Hong Kong-based arts organization that is solely devoted to the promotion and creation of contemporary music and experimental music. Since its inception, CM has impressed local and overseas audiences with its daring programming and highly experimental productions that merge contemporary music with technology and new media. Past productions include Electric Requiem: God Save the Queen, in collaboration with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong ; Hong Kong Explode, a multimedia rendition of Bach's classic Two Part Invention, re-arranged for New York's DITHER electric guitar quartet; and Box of Revelation, a unique performance of Messiaen's epic Quartet for the End of Time that is housed inside of a Facebook-inspired interactive installation, staged by members of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

CM believes in contemporary music as a relevant performing art form, and sees the desperate need for a forward-looking platform for musical experiments in Hong Kong. CM regularly invites overseas musicians to collaborate with local composers. In addition, through its strategic partnership with arts organizations across genres, CM provides a cross-disciplinary, multi-media platform for composers to experiment, explore and expand.

Comparing to the computer music performance 5 years ago by the sound and vision people, it is much more attractive to see real muical instrument than wires and plugs. The music itself is still quite middle of the road- not pop and melodic, not heavy sound and noise, not too complex orchestrated layers and loops, the night performance was mostly minimal and non- rhythmic. "Experimental", "Fusion" ,"Audio Visual" may be the formula for new music. Most video are sleek and good looking but really lack the variation and development to bring it to the front, so now it is remain aas the background for the music.

CALL FOR SHORT STEREOPHONIC SOUNDSCAPE & HOERSPIEL WORKS & SONIC POETRY

>A DIAMOND IN THE MUD<
A Miniature Audio Exhibition of Stereophonic Soundscape & Hörspiel Works

PROJECT CONCEPT:

It is an Asian concept rooted in Buddhism that self-cultivation can be developed at home as a householder and is not merely confined to a temple or monastery. Buddhist believe that enlightened beings are those who "grew" out of the "mud" of the material world. So, like the lotus flower, which penetrates through sullied mud and water, but emerges unspoiled, enlightened beings are beautiful and pure even though they grow up in the material world. The phrase "a diamond in the mud" is an analogy for this and in keeping with it the Digital Art Weeks would like to issue this call to artists and to submit pre recorded works (Soundscape, Hörspiel, Poetry) in regard to the beautiful and the sullied. The works will be chosen on their ability to transcend the listeners into a "moment of tranquilly" and out of the confines of the everyday, or as expressed in the Diamond Sutra: "Dwell upon nothing and produce the pure mind."

PLAYBACK SYSTEM:
Constructed as a dock for Apple's famed iPod, the iCarta stereophonic audio playback system will be used to play back all of the selected works. The systems not only offers an interesting solution for public pod-casting, but it also acts uniquely as a bathroom dispenser for the indispensable: Le papier toilette.

- Art Clay, DAW, Artistic Director (c) 2008

DEADLINE: Moday, 15th September 2008. Notification of acceptance of proposals will be sent out on or before Monday, 22nd September 2008.

Moveable type at NY Times Building

My all time favorite new media art work "Listening Post"(2002) has never been able to come to HK. Microwave presented only their photo documentation in 2004. I saw it finally last year at ISEA and get so moved that I almost broke out my tears.
The artist Ben Ruben and Mark H Hansen did a new project "Moveable Type" at the lobby of New York Times Building, using words from William Burrough.

Bio:

EMMANUEL MIEVILLE is a Paris born French sound artist and experimental musician who studied at the world renowned GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) in the field of musique concrete. He also studied sound engineering and attended a cinema school. His aesthetic concern and direction as a composer originate from a desire to give the listener a shifting or blurred perception of soundscapes. Musical experiments with sound-field materials or objects and instruments are undertaken within the intuitive and dynamic stream of unconscious brain stimulations. Some of his collaborations or improvisations yielding patterns or structures, that express ideas but most of the time, the idea of musical flux lingers on his works. His tropism towards sound scapes, sound sculpting and gathering of spatials tools for composition, provides him with a better understanding and perception of sound, as a vector for social awareness and wisdom.

He played for two years with a Javanese gamelan orchestra, and is interested in merging ethnic instruments into electroacoustic music. Amongst other collaborations, he has worked with several dancers for Butoh performances, with French composer/performer Eric Cordier a for live concert (2005), and with Korean video performer, Heesok Yu, for a concert. He also contributes and participates with much constancy to Framework, on Resonance FM (London), which is a radio show dedicated to field recordings.

The "html-movement-library" plus "Singing Website Wallpaper"

Singing Website Wallpaper gives voice to html by re-interpreting the code of three Websites such as yahoo.com, msn.com, and google.com as a musical score and visualizing the scales as printed patterns on wallpaper. While the sound component of the installation is influenced by the "live" html code of each site, the wallpaper shows "frozen" source code from each site translated into a visual set of functionality-related symbols. Depending on how the momentary html code of the site is structured, the program matches the acccording sound files to each html tag. For instance, if the html tag "table" appears in the code, my program (php) will interpret and "sing" the tag as "a", "b" and "e", as they are notes in musical notation. The same goes, for example, with the tag "head": we hear the "h", "e," "a," and "d." "h" exists in German music notation, so there is an extra "note" to sing...

Random Ascess Music

Can't agree more with John Maeda that Random Ascess Music is one of Nam June early works that I like so much.
"...My favorite work of Paik's is Random Access Music which is a series of technology art pieces. Imagine a wall with magnetic audio tape glued to it, and holding the playback head in your hand like a wand such that you can freely brush over the loops of tape and hear things. These pieces represent a wonderful destruction of conventional passive media, into completely different constructions that are interactive, analog, and ultimately human. "
Yes, thanks Nam June.

Using TVs as light sources: 77 million paintings - Brian Eno's new Generative art project

Interesting new art project by the god-father of ambient and post-punk Brian Eno.
The project uses custom software and scanned Eno's paintings to create new visuals that are synchronized with ambient sound.

For some reason if you google for '77 million paintings' you won't be able to find the official project web site, so here it is: http://77millionpaintings.com/
