(The Tate Triennial)...an international show that attempts to define the new art of the post-economic apocalypse, christening it “altermodern”.

It is a new world of “wandering in time, space and mediums”. “Altermodernity,” Bourriaud continues, “arises out of negotiations between different agents from different cultures and geographical locations.”Artists, by this reckoning, have become nomads, a mobile community of outsiders within a vast globalised society, choosing their images, like words, from roughly the same visual language. It’s the next stage, Bourriaud claims, for civilisation after postmodernism, and artists who mocked its own claims to greatness (the people who canned their own poo, put donkeys in art galleries or exhibited their smoked cigarettes).

Media Matters launches phase 2

A consortium of curators, conservators, registrars, legal advisors, and media technical managers from New Art Trust, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and Tate has launched the second phase of Media Matters, an innovative website designed to provide international guidelines for the care of time-based media works of art (e.g. video, slide, film, audio, and computer-based installations).Here

The 5th Seoul International Media Art Biennale (media_city seoul 2008) will be held in Seoul Museum of Art from September 12 to November 5, 2008. Seoul International Media Art Biennale has continued and prospered the event and its quality through the past four Biennale since 2000, being much recognized both domestically and internationally as a notable media art festival.

Especially, this 5th Biennale is significant in retracing prior exhibitions for the preparation of the next decade. Therefore it aims at asking fundamental and essential questions, such as “What is media art?” “What is the difference between traditional art and media art?” “What change in art has been caused from this?” and “What kind of effects will this bring?” and it will also attempt to find out the answers of these questions through the exhibition of various media artworks.

The theme of this Biennale is Turn and Widen and it consists of three categories; Section of Light, Section of Communication and Section of Time. The 5th Seoul International Media Art Biennale will be showing artworks by 70 teams from 26 countries. International Symposium, media_city seoul Archive and Matrix S will be held as related events of the Biennale.

A Grin Without a Cat is Chris Marker's epic film essay on the worldwide political wars of the 1960s and 70s: Vietnam, Bolivia, May '68, Prague, Chile, and the fate of the New Left. In his most recent film, Chris Marker reflects on French and international politics, art, and culture at the start of the new millennium. This engaging record of Marker's cinematic peregrinations throughout the city chronicles strikes, memorials, election campaigns, celebrity scandals, international political incidents, and a seemingly endless variety of political protests. The commentary running throughout The Case of the Grinning Cat offers the learned and witty reflections of the filmmaker, now in his early eighties, on the contemporary and historical implications of these varied events and personalities.

The screening will be followed by a moderated discussion with Jake Perlin, Assistant Film Curator/BAMCinematek and founder of The Film Desk.

Lecture by Okwui Enwezor: Night School Public Seminar 5: The Politics of Spectacle

Okwui Enwezor lectures on the politics of spectacle. Enwezor is Dean of Academic Affairs and Senior Vice President at San Francisco Art Institute. He is Adjunct Curator at International Center of Photography, New York and previously Adjunct Curator of Contemporary Art, at the Art Institute of Chicago. Enwezor is Artistic Director of the 7th Gwangju Biennale, opening September 2008.

Night School is an artist's project by Anton Vidokle in the form of a temporary school. A yearlong program of monthly seminars and workshops, Night School draws upon a group of local and international artists, writers, and theorists to conceptualize and conduct the program. This month's seminar is conceived by Okwui Enwezor.

All events are in the New Museum theater. Events are free or free with Museum admission but tickets are required.
